A recent ticket purchase via a TSM. What is a TSM specifically? Is this an upgrade from the TVM (Ticket Vending Machines) of the 1980s-1990s era?

The new TVMs also can issue MetroCard, unlike the prior generation.

These TVMs have been in use since 2001 have been able to dispense pre-encoded MetroCards since then. on both railroads.

Some people called them Ticket Selling Machine, others Ticket Vending Machine.

At Metro-North, which uses the same system as the LIRR, TSMs are the machines used by ticket sellers in the ticket office; TVMs are the self-serve machines used by customers.

We called the Ticket Office Machines, TOMs, at the LIRR. See the photo.

Worked with MNR when we were designing and testing them.

I understand that Cubic is going to be late with the new generation of TVMS and TOMS by a few years.

Hm. Maybe my retired mind is failing me. I definitely recall hearing the office machines referred to as TOMs, now that you say that.

Forget what I wrote. It’s froth coming from the mind of a doddering retiree. 🤣
