On a BBC programme about Mammoths the presenter mentioned that the tv team had been given a lift on a "private line" owned by a gas company. Does anyone know anything about this?

What was shown was a Russian broad gauge track and a rail car, which might have been a track inspection vehicle.

That would quite likely be the branch (now owned by Gazprom) from the RZD Kotlas-Labytnangi line beginning at Obskaya just west of Labytnangi, and serving the massive gas developments at Bovanenkovo in the Yamal Peninsula.

Meanwhile, just to the east across the Ob River, is the city of Salekhard, where Stalin's pet project began. This was to be a railway to Igarka on the Yenisei River and potentially further on to Norilsk. Overall, the project was a disaster, and only a section from Novy Urengoy to Nadym is in service.
