AVERAGE DELAY = 41"

Of the late trains"
56% were 29" or less late;
24% were 30" to 59" late;
13% were 1' to to' late;
6% were more than 2' late; and
<1% had no arrival time shown.

(E) - 65% - 20"

KANSAS CITY CORRIDOR
(W) - 18% - 40"
(E) - 24% - 30"

Results for this period were disappointing as the only services that showed improvement in both measured categories were the westbound B&A section of the "Lake Shore Limited" and both directions of the "Cardinal".

The "City of New Orleans" continued to be the best performing service.

Both directions of the "Crescent" performed poorly in spite of the additional padding in their schedules.

Likewise, all of the short corridors performed below expectations given the $$$ that have been put into the DET and STL Corridors and the general decline in the BUF and KCY routes. The number of mechanical failures raises doubts about the quality of work at Amtrak shops, particularly for the equipment dispatched out of CHI.

Another trend is Amtrak's failure to obtain corrective action from host carriers for the delays which occur repeatedly in the same locations. Perhaps Amtrak senior supervision is relying on trains recovering time given the extreme amounts of padding in many of the schedules. However, as shown in the performance of the "Crescent", that is not happening. An even better clue as to actual performance occurs on the BUF Corridor where the arrival time is taken at BUF, thereby missing the roughly 50" of padding between BUF and the final terminal at NFL which allows Amtrak to claim a higher OT performance.

As taken from Amtrak's Twitter sites, causes of delays for this period were:
Amtrak Equipment = 49
3rd Party = 19
Amtrak Holds = 11
Weather = 4
Cancelled / Annulled = 3
Host Carrier = 153
N.O.S. = 567

TOTAL = 806

This represents only most delays over 20" for the monitored services including those incurred en route even though the trains arrive OT at destination. So even though arrival may be recorded as OT at destination, arrival at major intermediate stations is often quite late.

And so it goes, on and on without corrective action.
