Looking at the new schedule, I noticed that NJT has built extra time into the late night connections at Summit. The last two locals from Hoboken to Gladstone have 17 minute hold, waiting for the Morristown train coming out of NYP.

The current sched makes the M&E almost a 24 hour a day operation. The last train pulls into Dover at 306am, about an hour and a half before the day starts for the first eastbound sets off.

Many years ago, that first eastbound MU would contain a milk car or two off the Sussex branch. At Newark, the cars would be dropped west of the station. A switcher would push them into the Borden Yard

I vaguely remember that milk train. It had to have at least two sets of MUs (four cars) in order to pull the weight of the milk car. Thanks for jogging that one up from memory.
