Sorry to say that Dick Avery, one of our ex-fellow engineers and
friend of the NYSW , passed away on saturday, Jan 27th.Dick worked with the D&H
and NYSW for 35 years until retired in 2001.We all enjoyed working
with him very much. I remember one of his favorite slogan : "what a
guy"!. I understand there is no calling or funeral. His obituary is in
the thedailystar.com, the Oneonta, NY Newspaper.
From Mark Wilber, NYSW engineer....

On a personal note:
That's sad news, indeed. I was fortunate enough to get to know him
and even ride with
the bird man" a few times before he retired. He was always a
gentleman to me, and I recall that he and Joe Dillon were the crew on
the very last 257 to operate from NJ on May 29, 1999. There is a
picture of him in the "Susquehanna in Color" book, by Paul
Tupaczewski, on page 112, as he is receiving a "rolling supply
transfer" in Warwick, NY from local railfan Larry Parkin, who was
known for years to bring out coffee, soda, and homemade cookies to
the crews and hand them off as they rolled through town. Those who
followed the NYS&W road trains, and Northern Division loals several
years ago may be familiar wuth him. I only hope he was able to enjoy
his retirement the past few years.
