Officials say no injuries were reported after an Amtrak train derailed at Union Station in Washington, D.C., Tuesday morning.

The D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department said in a tweet that its fire units were responding to a derailed Amtrak train in the tunnel at the entrance to Union Station, which serves as a transportation hub for Amtrak trains, metro trains and buses in the D.C. area.

The department said that the initial report was “minor in nature,” and there were no reported injuries in the occupied train.
Report says 86 was the train that derailed. Passengers were collected into upright cars and pulled into L'Efant Plaza outside the tunnel, where they were taken to a local hotel for examination. This jives with what's being told to Amtrak staff and some experiences being posted on Reddit's r/Amtrak subreddit (photo being one of them).

From CNJGeep in another thread:
Following the 86 derailment, trains are being combined, run over CSX to JD and shoving back in to Union Station.
That would explain the weirdness I saw on the tracking maps for 92. That... also explains the warning delays on the MARC Penn line (and probably Camden too, since Amtrak's using *that track* up to JD interlock) .

I'm hearing that as 92 reversed into Union Station they passed a stop signal and that is what snarled up MARC.

CSX had a bit of a field day as well helping Amtrak.

Any word on rerailing loco and cars? One tunnel operation probably really slows up the works. The accident apparently occurred in the western tunnel. That way arrivals from south could use tack 26 as arrivals on 26 from north do not have enough CAT to change locos . Tracks 27, 28, & 29 can be used for arrivals as one can be storage for southbound locos &temporary parking for motors. It is not easy but doable. Now exactly how passengers are being handled is up to on site observers.

BTW This incident had great cooperation. It was a VRE train that went into the tunnel coupled up to the non damaged cars. Then pulled those cars back to L'Enfant station to unload 86's passengers . Wonder if the Amtrak cars were hooked up to the VRE HEP to give passengers relief from heat.
