Could western, southern commuters get a rail option? Miami-Dade revives 836 train idea

Commuter trains would run to Homestead, Doral and other suburbs under a revived effort to use CSX freight tracks for passenger rail, a strategy studied since the 1980s and once again a focus of transit planners.

One train line would run from Miami International Airport along the 836 expressway to the Doral area, replacing a stalled plan to build a rapid-transit bus line on the busy toll road. Another train line would run from the airport to Homestead, along CSX tracks west of U.S. 1 and the existing Metrorail and South Dade busway.

There are no agreements or price estimates for either effort, with CSX executives preparing for their first round of meetings with county officials in Miami next month.

Ideally, you'd want an east-west line going right from downtown to, say, FIU. The CSX rock quarry line goes from the Miami Airport station to a park and ride lot on the other side of the FL Turnpike from the Dolphin Mall. No place to go from there w/o a shuttle or car.

As for the Homestead extension itself, it's a great idea all the way down to the Miami Zoo. Below that, however, the population thins out drastically as the line goes through the Redlands, and doesn't pick up again until it hits Homestead itself 9 miles further down.

A 9ish mile gap isn't too bad for commuter rail especially for outlying stations. After a station between Eureka Dr and 147th Ave, I can see value in a P&R station at hwy 997 about 4.5 miles down, then the next one between 296th and 15th st (4.5-5 miles) then 2 miles to a station at the existing Busway. On a ~30 mile route, having the last third be a station every 4-5 miles isn't bad and improves the end to end running time for people from Homestead.
