Everyone - 40 years ago this week New Jersey Transit Rail Operations began direct operation of New Jersey's Commuter Rail service with the exit of Conrail (NJDOT/NJT contract April 1, 1976 to December 31, 1982).

New Jersey's rail services were operated in two divisions - The Newark District (former Penn Central and CNJ) and the Hoboken District (former Erie Lackawanna) routes with the start of NJTRO in 1983.

Over time (NJDOT subsidized Commuter Rail beginning in the late 1960s before NJT was created in 1979) NJTRO became a stable operation - the enormous growth of lines such as the Northeast Corridor and the Morris and Essex LInes re-electrification beginning service in August 1984 were significant examples of improvements.

40 years of NJT rail service for New Jersey is something all interested to take note of...MACTRAXX
