This weekend August 22-23, 2015
They are upgrading the crossing on Genesee Street in Utica
The rails are up
it appears they are going to place a concrete rail bed in place
and replace the rails

A large amount of ties are being piled up at the junction of the Syracuse and Utica branches in beautiful downtown Chenango Forks, NY. Unknown which line they're intended for.

Was told by family members there were a number of cars in Chenango Forks loaded with ties over the weekend.

Drove from Norwich south on Route 12 yesterday. Yes, looked to be approximately 800-1,000 new ties (maybe more, that's my WAG) stacked just south of the road crossing. Also a loader present. Too early in the morning for any activity.

Driving through Norwich, most of the roadbed seemed to be in good shape, ballast looked clean, a few spots of weeds but all in all, looked like the tracks were somewhat maintained in spite of no rail traffic for years. Is NYSW doing any preventive maintenance, or was the lack of weed growth a function of a dry summer?

The Chenango County IDA had a grant a few years back for brush removal and tree clearing on the line. NYSW has done nothing on the line since whenever it was shut down.

They don't own it. The county owns it.

My bet is if the line was repaired to running status, they would use it rather than run to Syracuse on CSX to get to home rails again.

Here are two pics taken tonight showing a very large number of ties bundled together & placed on the Syracuse side in Chenango Forks:
