In a New Zealand discussion group , somebody claimed that the railway crossing the actual runway in Gisborne , N.Z is the only such crossing in the world . Others pointed out that there is one in Tasmania , Australia ( although there was some doubt as to wether the line actuaaly crossed the runway , or run along side ).There seems to be one in Ireland too .

Anyone know of these and other runway crossings by railroads ? .

Well, this page indicates the railway at Wynyard (Tasmania, Aus) does indeed cross the runway, and the train crew must activate the crossing lights to signal the aircraft (with big red lights) via radio

Not sure if this line is only a tourist operation, although that was the feeling I got from the page. Some other pages claim cement trains used this line.

There is one in the U.S.ofA., featured in grade crossing advertisements. It may be at the Boing airplane factory in the State of Washington.

In Northern Ireland the train to Londonderry/Derry City passes very near to the end of a runway.

Found this link with a 1971 photo of a passing freight train holding up a plane from taking off at Wynyard:

A little on the signaling system:

There is one railroad/runway crossing in Peshawar, Pakistan (ICAO Code OPPS). Although the rai track is not used anymore, the tracks are still there.

If you look closely at the Google image, you can see the tracks crossing the (now closed) runway in Tasmania, mentioned above: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Wynyard,+ ... a&t=h&z=18

If you slide East, to Mount Hicks road and chose "Street View", you'll see the tracks are closed as well. :(

Kirtland AFB/Albuquerque Sunport had a railroad crossing on taxiway M8 just past the east end of the main runway 08-26.

http://www.globalair.com/d-TPP_pdf/00012ad.pdf

The pads reached from M8 were all for hangars reserved to specific military R&D projects, so they were never high-utilization. Not sure when the track was removed (probably mid-90s?), but the rail is still in the taxiway.
