I heard NS 345 (with two 8-40C's) call clear at 195 on its way in to Tuscaloosa.
I tried to catch it crossing McFarland on the bridge but missed. As I turned to
walk away I heard the distinct sound of brakes being applied. NS 345 was in
emergency as it neared CP Bryant. The train came to a a stop and I took off for
10th Avenue to catch it get underway. It turned out the EOT malfunctioned coming
over the hill into Tuscaloosa and sent the train into emergency, The conductor
had to walk the entire train all the way back the end.(the end being up around
Kicker Road)
To make a long story short check out this video with the conductor riding the
last car at speed through Tuscloosa. They would meet 172 at Crabtree on the main
and then do a reverse move to pick up the conductor.. This is why a caboose is
needed!
