Does anybody think the scheme was inspired by their lake-going ferries, with the forward yellow part being a bow wave and the blue upper being the hull? It was introduced in 1947, when the prior PM logo was a giant red circle - I can't imagine anybody wanted the Japanese zero as their logo at the time.

Possibly..but it the colors are those of the University of Michigan's sports colors (Maize and Blue..and the grey for the road jerseys). The :wave: of yellow is not for water..but rather based off the "wing" and stripes on the U of M helmets.
