Whatever happened to the status displays at the bottom of the displays in stations? A couple of years ago, PATH was using the space to show where the next train was, along with a rough idea of when it'd be arriving. Now, it's back to just displaying the word "PATHvision." I think that it had just been done as a test, but it seemed to work pretty well, and I certainly appreciated having an idea of how long the wait was.

It started out fine but after a while the display never matched the train that was (or wasn't) arriving. It would show a Hoboken train arriving when it was actually a 33rd St train etc. It would even shown a train arriving when there was none.

What they used was not very sophisticated. A station by station timetable was used in a computer program. Based on the timetables the computer had the monitor display in a particular station show when a train was supposed to leave the previous station and then again when it was supposed to arrive at the next station.

The system was a rigid one so that if there was a delay the program just kept running as if everything was OK. It got to the point where they just stopped using it. Maybe they will come up with something better one of these days.
