Likely most here are already familiar with the well known Link photographic portrait of an N&W A-class steam locomotive passing a drive-in movie; here is a revisit from Today's New York Times:

I had occasion, a few days ago, to recall the huge archive of photos of Southern Pacific operations in the 1950's by Richard Steinheimer. Beyond these two gentlemen, I can't think of anyone else who conveyed the atmosphere of day-to-day rail operation, undergoing major changes, at a special point in history, so tastefully.

Sadly, the outcome of this can be seen even in Stein's later work. The industry's need to insulate itself from an increasigly diverse, polarized and litigation-conscious society is understandable, but in the process, something uniquely beautiful was rendered sterile, where not obliterated outright.

Happiness is never experienced, only remembered.(Oscar Levant)
