This book was published in 2005. It illustrates -- beautifully, I might add -- the infrastructure that makes a major metropolis work, 24/7. New York was the city used as a reference. There are six section to the book: (1) Moving People, (2) Moving Freight, (3) Power, (4) Communications, (5) Keeping It Clean, and (6) The Future.

In the section on Moving Freight (page 58) the author describes what goes into a frieght train, the various types of cars, and what a hump and classificaiton yard means. On page 63 there is a sidebar featuring NYA and it's history. Nice color photo of the Jeeps. Joseph Tischner is credited with the photo. The author of "The Works" is Kate Ascher, and the publisher is Penguin books.

There is indepth info on the workings of the subway system, the NYC area bridges and things like water mains, sewers and the mail system. I got it as a gift and was amazed at the amount of detailed information not otherwise available at the flip of a page.
