The famous Ronan Grand Plan from 1968 did have the third rail end at Northport rather than Huntington. As a matter of fact, the original M1 roll signs (remember them?!) had "NORTHPORT", "REPUBLIC" (which was going to be the end of third rail on the Main Line) and "JFK AIRPORT". Also, the original US&S Traffic Control Center interlocking machine at Divide had a small yard at Northport that was painted over. This was, of course, using the existing single-track line.
