Noon DEC 4 WTIC-AM reported a derailment in Mansfield-only tracks there are NECR. At least one car on its side.

Mansfield is the town north of Willimantic. Most of the ROW is on or near a riverbank.

Boy, the NECR seems to be having a train load of problems this fall.... on the North End we've had 3 broken couplers last week, a washout over the weekend in Roxbury, and back at the end of October, some 80+ defects detected. When stuff goes wrong, it all goes wrong, apparently. Just the nature of the beast.

I wish I could echo the "just the nature of the beast" but I am not so sure
about that one. I think the NEC might be slackening back on important
track work or they wouldn't be having all of these problems. The Central
Vermont in their days took excellent care of the track on both the
Southern and Northern Divisions. The Northern Division at one time rode
as smooth as silk at 59 MPH, the maximum speed as there were no
automatic block signals in use north out of White River Junction. When
the NEC bought the line they said that they were going to operate the
railroad with much less help. I suppose the high standard of the CV would
carry the NEC for a period but eventually the deferal of vital track work
would catch up with them and I suspect that has now occurred.
The Conn River and the former CV are pretty vital to the state (Vermont)
and it will be very interesting to see just what happens here in the months
and years to come. I sure hope that they can and will do better.

If this keeps up they may not get to run the autoracks thru Bellows Falls.
No auto maker is going to let such high value cargo travel over tracks that are highly subject to damage.

Sounds like a cash-strapped railroad scraping by and cutting back on track work and maintenance. And with the history of the line from East Northfield to White River Jct. having these problems under previous ownership, it looks like 1987 all over again.

TV news reported that the track should be open for business today.

Five cars of a 20-car freight derailed.

they do havea fair amount of traffic
if rail america woudl sell it off to a better owner improvements in tracks and markettign the line could potentially get more freight

When I worked there over 10 years ago the track was horrible a bandaid here and a bandaid there....Looks like nothing has changed

I'm not going to say anything specific, but in my uneducated opinion it had nothing to do with track conditions. Two other trains passed over this same section of track within 12 hours of the derailment without issue. I can't say much else, but you can draw your own conclusions.

And kitn1mcc, ya beat me to it. Thanks for posting the link over to my photos of the wreck. ;) What a mess....but it was quite impressive watching the RJ Corman guys in action.

Thanks!

Nope, everything is back on the rails, and as of Tuesday all 5 cars are sitting on the CERM lead in Willimantic. The two cars that were on their sides now have tarps over them.

It was quite impressive watching them roll one of the hoppers back onto it's trucks. I left after they got that one back upright and mostly on the rails. Here's a sequence of them righting one of 'em:
