Regional railroad forced to trim staff
BANGOR DAILY NEWS
By Walter Griffin
HERMON, Maine — The slumping economy, coupled with last year’s shutdown of the Katahdin Paper Co. mill in Millinocket, has had a ripple effect at the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railroad. Company president Bob Grindrod said that the railroad has been forced to lay off 75 of its 315 employees over the past six months. Although he acknowledged that business activity had slowed, the railroad was in no danger of closing.

It's always sad when things like this happen, and I feel particularly bad for the guys who have young families to support. Finding a new job at a time like this is extraordinarily difficult, especially if you're looking for something other than McDonald's or Dunkin' Donuts. (Who can support a family on that kind of pay?)

Not the change the subject, but why is it that whenever MMA lays off employees it immediately shows up in the papers and on TV, but when Pan Am lays people off, the media never mentions it?

Becasue MM&A announces layoffs? Pan Am never does (they never announce anything).

The article mentions a temporary shutdown at Fraser in Madawaska, Id heard one paper machine might get shut down for a while, hopefully that is all they are referring to? If Fraser shut down entriely, things would get pretty bleak.
