The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) and the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced today the conclusion of the environmental planning process for the Long Bridge rail project. This marks a major milestone in the planning process for the new rail bridge and independent pedestrian/bicycle bridge that will span the Potomac River and opens the door for the final engineering design, financing, and construction of Long Bridge.

All I can say is, thank god they chose the upstream option. That will allow Amtrak and VRE to run on their own tracks from VA to RO out of the way of freight traffic. Next project should be moving the VRE L'Enfant plaza station east of 7th street and put the 4th track in the 5th track way to allow an island platform at L'Enfant plaza and 2 track between VA and the north end of the new bridge. The alignment between 7th and 4th streets was originally built to accommodate 5 tracks as there were building on the north side of the alignment that had tracks that went into the second floors. After that add the 4th track between RO and AF.
