From The Berkshire Eagle:
The Berkshire Eagle wrote:The Housatonic Railroad is cleaning up its second train derailment in a month's time, the latest near the crossing at Lime Kiln Road in Sheffield.
. . .
Around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, local authorities were notified that six railroad cars of a 35-car train had jumped the tracks and toppled over just north of the crossing. One car was empty, four were hauling construction debris and one carried limestone, according to Housatonic spokesman Colin Pease.
. . .
The accident was caused by a broken rail, Pease said.

Tell me about it.

I'm expecting one of these days my dad to send me pictures of a derailment in front of his house.

Does the HRRC handle any haz-mat shipments, such as LPG, chemicals, etc.?

How bad does the condition of a line need to get before the FRA steps in and orders a shutdown?
  by MEC407

Under most circumstances a complete shutdown due to poor track conditions would be very unlikely, but depending on the results of their inspections they can impose speed restrictions, down to as little as 5 MPH. I don't think they'd completely halt service on a line unless a bridge was in danger of imminent collapse or something similar.

HRRC tracks look like the Northeast Corridor when you compare them to tracks such as these: http://youtu.be/TrvLK24VlEs?t=1m59s

FRA or STB can order a boycott by not allowing interchange if conditions no longer meet track standards. they can totally embargo the HRRC.

Believe HRRC knows how to lay on the weed killer spray real heavy, otherwise the track would have been as bad as MAW's track.

Do you suppose the P&W is waiting in the shadows?
Black and Red would look good in Pittsfield...

Believe P+W would be happy if HRRC went belly up.
P+W would reopen the Maybrook line from Derby Jct to Danbury.

Sorry- meant that I didn't think the Housy's tracks looked in that much better shape than the Maumee & Western trackage in the video clip you posted.

I've actually been shocked recently to see how bad things look north of Danbury. I remember it all being in pretty good shape in the mid-90's and even into the early '00s.

When I took the Farewell to FL9's trip back in 2005
Track speed was 10-15 miles per hour from Danbury to Cannan, Connecticut
Had to stop and warn at all crossings
Coming back engineer did around 20-25 miles per hour
And Houstonic did track work the day before
