Today is a slow day. I don"t have to watch the grand daughters. At the opposite end of the scale, could the lowest point of the System be on the lower level at GCT?
Sorry!

Taking a guess, I would say on the docks in Weehawken,

tocfan,

Weehawken dock trackage was above water level.

GCT Lower Level trackage was well below water level. GCT Power Plant
was even lower. During the NYC blackout of the 1970's, the power plant was flooded because the pumps were off line.

We even had one occasion when a city water main leak flooded part of the Lower Level trackage at the bottom of the grade from Tower U on the low side of the house.

I have heard that the highest point on the WLR between GCT and Albany was in the Park ave tunnel, that is why I didn't think it was below sea level, I stand corrected. Thanks

tocfan,

The high point in the Park Ave. Tunnel is at E. 86th St. where it
lies under Lenox (?) Hill.

If you could crest the hill at the max authorized speed of 35mph
going outbound, you could coast all the way across the Harlem
Viaduct, over the Harlem River Drawbridge, and into Mott Haven Interlocking before having to take power again.

Inbound, of course, you coasted down to Tower U at E. 56th St.,
braking for the reduced speed from E. 59th St. on into GCT. You
could continue to coast down to the Lower Level, but ususally
had to take power on the grade into Tower A's plant on the Upper
Level. Either way, you had to watch out for the 3rd rail gaps.

Hope this helps.
