I was asked by a colleague here at work where she might get geocodes for rail mileposts. Since most rail mileage here in Utah is UP, I pose the question on this forum. She needs to know so she can more effectively code up hazardous rail spills. We are an environmental epidemiology state agency.

Can anyone give me a clue?

Well, I could compute them for you, given MP0 and the route of the rails, but .... I was cautioned by the Vermont Railway Systems engineer that "mileposts" has always been an approximate term. They were never all THAT accurately placed, plus if you have any rerouting of the tracks, that ruins all.

Basically, you need to get this information from UP directly. And if they don't have it, you'll need somebody to go out with a GPS and get them.

Thanks. I'll pass this along.
