In the Cuba township (Lake cty, IL.) newsletter a year or so ago was mention of a derailment on the EJ & E years ago near the Cuba Rd. X-ing @ Lake Zurich, IL. Supposedly the locomotive was abandoned in the marsh that it had slid into. There was a promise of a follow up on the story but it never appeared. A call to the township was fruitless.
There are indeed plenty of marshes along the track between Barrington and Lk. Zurich and from the context of the story it sounds as if this may have occured during the forties, lending creedence to abandoning a loco.
Is there a (steam?) loco in the marsh here??
A perusal of the EJ & E roster did turn up a loco listed as scrapped without a buyer.
An interesting story. Does anyone here know more?
Thanks all,
Ross
