Is freight service to Eastport and its port operation still active?

Service between Ayer Jct. and Eastport was abandoned in 1978 and the tracks removed in 1980. The line from near Brewer to St. Croix (near Calais) was abandoned in 1985, but the tracks are still in place and are owned by the state of Maine. There are some proposals to run a tourist train on some of the line and remove the rails on other parts, converting it to a trail. I do not have the exact current details of these proposals.

There has been no interest rail service in Eastport since the much-hyped oil refinery proposal of about thirty years ago. The new pier apparently attracted some forest products business, but not enough to justify rail.

FWIW, if you're interested in hiking and such things, the old right of way through Eastport is, in the words of my former boss from Maine, "as plain as the ass on a goat." Observe private property, of course.
