Gang Mills

Route 15 Northbound in Gang Mills could remain closed through Thursday evening according to fire officials at the scene of a train derailment. Gang Mills fire chief Dan Dillon tells WETM-18 News that four Norfolk Southern railroad cars derailed around 9:15 a.m. Two of those cars are carrying liquid butane, a highly flammable substance.

Dillon says that at this time emergency crews have been able to access the area and determine there is no liquid butane leaking from either of these tanker cars. However, Route 15 Northbound could remain closed for many hours while emergency crews upright the cars and put them back on the tracks.

Rudy Husband, of Norfolk Southern, tells WETM-18 News that righting these cars could take many hours, but this is not affecting the railroad's operations. Husband says the derailment occured as workers were shifting rail cars in the rail yard that runs parallel to Route 15. About six to eight Norfolk Southern workers were evacuated from the yard, but officials have not ordered any further evacuations.

At this time traffic is being diverted off of Route 15 at exit 3 onto State Route 417. Stay with WETM 18 News for the latest on this breaking news story.
