Pardon my ignorance, but who are the leading locomotive manufacturers now? I know there's EMD (a division of GM) and GE, but who else might there be?

Electro-Motive is no longer a division of General Motors. Under the new owner, the D in "EMD" now stands for "Diesel," rather than "Divison."

After EMD and GE, the only other big player in diesel locomotives is MotivePower Industries of Boise, Idaho, a relatively recent entrant into the passenger locomotive business. I believe the two largest operators of MPI locomotives right now are Metra, which has a fleet of 27 MP36PH-3S engines, and CalTrain, which owns six similar MP36PH-3C models.

I believe the MBTA Commuter Rail's F40's (those that have been re-built/over-hauled) were sent to Motive Power.

There is also RailPower Technologies, manufacturer of the Green Goat and Green Kid hybrid switcher locomotives.

I believe the PL42AC diesels ordered by NJT are made by Alstom, powered by EMD engines.
