I have been from Bunbury to Brisbane (and Melbourne and Ballarat).

Are any of the lines electrified, and is there any substantial commuter service, or is it sort of like Amtrak, just token runs to provide basic service maybe once a day?

The Queensland main line is electrified, for freight and passenger.

There is an extensive suburban electrified system in Brisbane.
Another in Sydney. The main line to the west from NSW is electrified. I remember the Indian-Pacific having a loco change for the last section, to Sydney, possibly at Lithgow.

There are electrified suburban networks in Melbourne and Perth. Everything else is diesel.

The best place to find the answers to those questions is to visit the Australian version of Railroad.net ... that being Railpage Australia
