5 1/2 hours * 79 miles/hour = 434 miles. <750, so Amtrak won't pay for it, it will have to be state subsidized or make a real profit. At $500 or $1.15 / passenger-mile if there is a reasonable number of passengers it should easily earn a profit even with complementary food, beverage and music. So why are they bringing in Amtrak? I assume negotiations with the host railroad(s) have broken down and they want to contract for Amtrak crews to use Amtrak's power to demand access. And Amtrak sees this as a rare opportunity to make some coin and improve economy of scale
