Rather then post a bunch of pictures, the pictures can be seen on my site.

I have not been able to find any official information about the reconstruction as of yet.

Very interesting Mike.... Where did you hear this?? Was it from one of the DL employees??? How many miles of the branch to the Quarry will be rebuilt??

Let us know if and when it becomes official!

I wonder if this is just a rumo. I read about Mascaro landing a big contract to haul NJ trash to the landfill in Dunmore. But the article clearly indicates this is a trucking operation. No future rail use mentioned.

J.P. Mascaro & Sons landed a contract to haul Morris County, N.J., garbage to the Keystone Sanitary Landfill in Dunmore.

The Audubon, Montgomery County-based company's $135 million, 5-year contract, will bring 65 new jobs and 400,000 tons of municipal solid waste annually to Dunmore. The company is hiring 65 people and is renovating an old truck depot in anticipation of the biggest contract in the privately-owned company's 50-year history. In late January, Mascaro will begin operating two Morris County solid waste transfer stations in Mount Olive and Parsippany that receive solid waste from curbside pickup in Morris County.

The two Morris County transfer stations are not anywhere close to rail lines. Even if they were, how many days would it take for a carload of trash to get to the landfill?
3 or 4 days, I'd guess, unless it moved as a unit train.

One day to Washington,
One day to Allentown
Layover at Allentown??
Another day to Portland
Another day to Scranton

The transfer stations are between 1.5 and 2 hours driving time to the Scranton area.

It is always nice to dream, but if Morris County and NJ was truly looking at trying to keep trucks off their interstate highways then couldn't they always truck the garbage from the Mount Olive transfer to Bartley or Flanders on the High Bridge Branch?? Since there aren't any customers left on the old CNJ Branch you would think someone would look into that. You could construct a few yard tracks and have a garbage transfer station near the old Toys R Us facility.

Obviously it probably won't ever happen due to NIMBY complaints, but unit trains from Flanders and then west over NJT to the Washington Secondary and then up the Portland to the Scranton area could take less then 2 days if done right.

I wish I had better news with which to revive this old thread but the finest newspaper ever, the poorly written, even more poorly edited, and seemingly unproofread Times Tribune (Scranton Times) has reported today that there will be no rail service to the Keystone Landfill.

The website-

-requires membership so the article from this fine, well written, hirer of the finest collection of barely literate writers this side of the Lackawaxen may or may not be visible.

I always thought the haul from Jersey to Dunmore was far too short to be very competitive for rail. If nothing else, it would have been nice to see the quarry ship stone out by rail.

As usual, thanks for the awesome site, Mike. If you ever want to shoot the two planes on our private property in Lake Ariel, just let me know.
