From WinchesterPatch:
WinchesterPatch wrote:Even with the snow, Winchester residents showed up in force Thursday night at Town Hall to discuss the freight trains that are stopping [in] their neighborhood.

Cynthia Scarano Executive Vice President of Pan Am Railways attended the meeting and informed residents that there is little her company can do because they are a common carrier.

“We’re obligated to deliver to them because we’re a common carrier,” Scarano said. “The customer contacted us and wanted to make deliveries in that area.”

Melanie Carden just wanted to know if she could get a full night’s sleep. According to Carden, more than a few times her and her husband have been woken up in the middle of the night due to a train horn, while the freight trains were making their stop.

"People didn’t buy into this neighborhood knowing there was going to be freight train service."

At this point, just about any non-residential land use abutting an active or semi-active rail line could be seeing freight service again. Face it, you made an investment, and investments have risks, and apparently you lost. You couldn't see it ever happening, so you lose. Suck it up. Case closed.

yeah and im sure the freight train in the middle of the night is devaluing there property not the economy. besides the next buyer wont know about the train until after they move in anyway. they should have put more effort into researching the area before they bought a house there instead of whining after the fact.

Is this Winchester part of Chicago? How much action is going on here? Why dont they email the cargo instead ? I bet the people of Winchester do their share of consuming things that have to be transported!

There is ongoing station work in Winchester and Wedgemere, so the horn blowing falls
under Roadway Worker rules (if this is the scenario I believe is happening).

As for horn blowing at Montvale Yard, again this could be for trackwork that might be taking
place in the yard, or alerting a switcher.

In other words, it's a very temporary construction condition they're trying to pass off as a permanent evil. And possibly the T's order...but can't pick on them because they might get mad and consolidate the two stations a ridiculous few blocks from each other which they're rebuilding because we whined enough. So let's blame the private freight carrier instead.

Sigh. People...and the too much time they have on their hands.

Is tighe getting regular service now? I've read they only re-installed the switch as a selling point for future customers.

A quick google search of the complainant shows she lives at the end of balwin st. which looks like its about 100ft from the tighe switch off the main line. It looks like there is another abandoned spur running behind baldwin st. that eventually crossed holton st. God help her if they re activate that someday.

I also find it hilarious how they said they battled the snow to talk about it. Like any of the "storms" this winter have been anything. I'd like to see any of these yuppies working outside during the last winter we had. Then we can talk about battling snow.
