The city of Wilmington has completed their alternatives analysis for the reroute of CSX trains heading to the port. The plan involves a new river crossing just South of Memorial Bridge and will create a new route from the Navassa yard to the new bridge on Eagle Island (just to the west of 74/421). The existing tracks through town will be repurposed for “public use”.

Its an important project for the city (no more 15 minute road blocking trains and potential ROW for transit), the port (much faster rail service), and CSX (allowing them to step away from some slow track that is in poor condition).

None of this will have much impact on the proposed Raleigh-Wilmington passenger service.
