I could be wrong but I believe it has to do with the original numbering of the tracks through that area prior to them becoming shuttle-only tracks since tracks in one direction are even and in the other are odd. Am I missing something?

Track 2 was removed in order to put in a platform for track 3.

-anyone got an old track map showing where the siding from the 42 St. line to the Hotel Belmont basement was? The original subway line opened in 1904; the Hotel was opened in 1908. Would the siding have still been there until the west side and Lexington lines opened, and 42nd St . was converted to a shuttle?
