Back in 1951 with the Erie Lackawanna E-8's with increased fuel capacity that eliminated a refueling stop on the Buffalo to Hoboken runs. Train number 40 out of Scranton to Hoboken N,J,
Why is it you can't take a train to Scranton fron N.Y. anymore ? For those who don't want to drive and could stay in Scranton longer could see more sights and take the train to NY & if they want Metro-North to CT.
Does Scranton have a Passenger station anymore ? or are most of the tracks that are there for freight only from Hoboken to Buffalo ?

The former Lackawanna station in Scranton is now a hotel and the tracks from Scranton to Binghamton are freight only and owned and operated by Canadian Pacific. The ex DL&W main line from Binghamton to Corning, except for a short stretch in Elmira for switching industries is gone as is the DL&W main west of Wayland to Groveland and Greigsville to Lancaster,NY. Lancaster to downtown Buffalo, for the most part is gone. From Scranton to the Delaware Water Gap is primarily freight, but Steamtown runs seasonal excursions on part of the line, usually as far as Mount Pocono or even Tobyhanna, sometimes to the Water Gap as well. The Lackawanna Cutoff, now out from Slateford Junction to Port Morris is now out, but presently in the process of preparation to be put back in for commuter trains to and from Scranton. Bridge across the Delaware River needs extensive repairs if not a total rebuilding. When the commuter trains start running to Scranton, I cannot help but wonder if any of the still existing stations will be used for the service. That, too me, would make a great deal of sense and save some construction expense. The Groveland-Greigsville main line segment is now a part of the Rochester and Southern Railroad and hauls salt out of the mine att Hampton Corners near Mt. Morris, where a beautiful brick station still stands, albeit boarded up since Conrail closed the agency in 1976-77. I hope this clears up a lot of questions about the status of the DL&W main line. In Buffalo, the DL&W Black Rock Branch is virtually all gone.

Thank You CaseyJim. My wife & I stayed at the Lackawanna hotel a few times & the former DL&W station is beautiful and are planning to go back. I heard there was talk of having a commuter line from Scranton to N.Y. and in these times it would really be good. I was just wondering if Scranton had a passenger station in 2009 .

Yes, there's a really long thread right above this one... http://railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=85&t=4246

Yup, it's just a hotel now. The only passenger trains in Scranton now are the occasional Steamtown excursions. The old Lackawanna station is a very nice Raddisson...
