RS stands for Road Switcher as in ALCO Models RS-1, RS-2, RS-3 ect, ect.

As a reporting mark on a railroad Car it stands for Roberval & Sugwnay Railroad.

You are almost right - but in the context of LIRR/NY&A freight operations, it stands for... Road Switcher :P (Just not the Alco models, just the train symbol)

e.g. "NY&A yard job RS301 ("RS" stands for road switcher) handles the Conrail interchange"
