$6.6 Million Project Set To Complete Dual Rail Service For Volkswagen
CSX, Norfolk Southern Will Again Do Business At Former VAAP Site
posted October 14, 2010

A $6.6 million project will assure that the new Volkswagen plant will have dual rail service, county officials said.

Tim Andrews, who heads the county Railroad Authority, said the predecessors of Norfolk Southern and CSX served the old Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant.

He said when the plant closed in 1982 that CSX let some of its track deteriorate and abandon several sections.

Mr. Andrews said CSX officials always maintained that if new business developed at the site that the rail line would return.

He said CSX officials asked for help after learning the high pricetag for repairing its lines.

Mr. Andrews said it was determined that CSX will pay one-third, a state Fast Track grant will provide another third, and VW was assigned the other third. Actually, the VW portion will come from $20 million the county promised for VW projects.

Rail shipment will be a key component of delivering materials and shipping completed autos when the plant opens next year, officials said.

Mr. Andrews said it is to the benefit of VW and to other industries at the Enterprise South Industrial Park to have two competing rail lines.
