virtually all hostels , abit of camping , and of course nites on the train . The 6 months also includes time in Mexico and Canada .
I was lucky to have a well paying job when i was young , and by the time i came out of my apprenticeship i had saved enough to do this trip , plus another year or so travelling Europe etc . i dont really have any tips on cheap accomadation ,other than the youth hostels , and if you have a car or bike and are in wilderness areas , a tent .

The only train trips I regret are the ones I didn't take.
