If there is a signal failure in the NYC subway system how will the trains operate?

In the event of a signal failure, trains may operate at Restricted speed once they I recieve permission to do so from the Control Center or from a Signal Maintainer or supervisor in the field.

During signal system failures while one group of signal personnel is engaged In repairing the problem, another group provides for safe movement of trains through the area.

Other rules instruct the motorman on what to do if the train is stuck behind a red signal and the radio system is not functional either.

In New York, do they have to "key by" the automatic train stop (trip) ?

Red Automatic signal, stop, call control, with permission proceed according to rule. Most automatic signals have an automatic "key-by" feature (no key needed) bridge the insulated joint before the signal and the stop arm will be driven down. You can now proceed as per rule.
