The TA had apparently caught on to the Port Authority's idea of designing a visually attractive train to help promote ridership. The idea was right, and the train was aesthetically pleasing, but for well known reasons, not very practical in the New York Subway.

It's also been suggested that had the R-40/Slants been designed with the same A-B-B-A configuration of the later R-44/46's, (instead of married-pairs) the slant design might have been more successful, as most of the cars would have had standard ends to simplify passing between cars, which was permitted in those days.

And Frank, you're right about those R-40 seats. The backs were too short, unlike the previous seats used on other cars of the 1960's.
Everyone: Interesting thoughts about the R40 "slant" cars...They were designed by Raymond Loewy (of PRR GG1 design fame) and I always found
interesting how the MTA changed their front-end design and that there were two groups of R40 cars...and-Yes the PA1 PATH cars had a good mid
1960s design inside and out for that matter - it may have made more sense designing a IRT car in this manner noting the similar size instead
of the BMT/IND size R40 "slants"...

Why didn't they install bucket seats like the ones on the R44/46s, R62s and R68s? In my opinion, they weren't as bad as the R40s.

BART also used a slanted car design in the late 1960s, in A/B configuration rather than pairs. The R40 did start the trend toward rounded bodies from the "arched boxcar" or "arched brick" of the R15-R38s.

When I first saw the R40s, they reminded me of the BART cars. It must've been the slanted ends. The slanted ends were very modern when they came out in 1968, but the looks of the R40s were ruined when they put gate hardware on the fronts of the cars. It would have been better if they made the R40s 5-car sets instead of married pairs, then they wouldn't need to have the hardware up front.

These videos were taken in 2009. The first one is of a short ride on an R160 N train on the Astoria Line from 39th Ave to Queensboro Plaza in Long Island City. Shortly after leaving 39th Ave, the train goes over the East Side Access work. The second video is a ride on an R46 A train on the Fulton Street Line between Rockaway Blvd to 80th St-Hudson St in Ozone Park.

I recently uploaded these two videos. The first one was taken in 2009. It is a RFW ride on an R32 C train from Utica Ave to Nostrand Ave on the Fulton St subway in Brooklyn. Its one of my last videos I took with my old camera. The second one is a little off-topic but it is my only videos so far of the Staten Island Railway. I was railfanning the SIRT in 2006 when I got caught up in a severe thunderstorm in Tottenville. I took shelter in the train where I took the videos. The storm was pretty intense! The video at the end of the second one is of the train going over an interlocking north of Tottenville during the same storm. I haven't been to Staten Island in a couple years. I may railfan the SIRT in the future and take some videos as well.

I consider the SIRT part of the nyc subway. After all, they're featured on the subway map as a line.

Enjoyed

These are my first R1/9 videos I uploaded. The first one is actually two videos; one of the Nostalgia train arriving at 2nd Ave station and ohter is the ride on the Nostalgia train (R4 401 apparently) from W4th St to 34th St-Herald Sq with stops at 14th St and 23rd St. The second one is a ride on R6 1300 from Lexington Ave to Queens Plaza. The first video was taken in 2007, the last video was taken in 2008.

These are my first subway videos I uploaded with my new camera. They were both taken last May. The first video is a short RFW ride from Chambers St to Canal St on an R32 C train. The second video is of a R142 5 train departing Brooklyn Bridge- City Hall with another R142 5 train arriving on the southbound track. I still have some videos from my old camera that I may soon upload.

These videos were taken in 2005 and 2006 resectivley. The first video is a short video of a Brooklyn bound N train departing 5th Ave station. The second video is of a RFW ride onboard an Jamaica Center bound R42 J train from 104th St to 121st St. It's one of my early RFW videos.

These are the last videos I'm uploading this year, so new videos will not be uploaded until early January. So in the meantime Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

The first video was taken at 96th Street on the Lexington IRT Line, it is of a southbound R142A 6 train. The second video is of a short RFW ride on an R32 C train from Spring Street to Canal Street. Note at the end of the video you can see passengers transferring from a Brooklyn-bound A train that has arrived across the platform. Both videos were taken in 2014.

These videos were taken in 2008/9 respectivly. The first video is of a ride on a R142 2 train from Jackson Avenue to Third Avenue-149th Street. This short section has quite a bit of history to it. It is the location of the junction between the White Plains Rd Line and the 3rd Ave el's Bergen Ave cutoff. You can still see the stumps for the former Bergen Ave elevated structure just before the train goes into the tunnel. The second video is one of my shorter videos. It is of a then brand new Astoria-bound R160B W train departing Queensboro Plaza station.

These videos were taken late last year. The first uploaded video is of some NY Subway action at 59th Street - Columbus Circle. The first four videos were taken on the downtown platform of the IRT station and has some R62A and R142 action. The fifth video was taken on the downtown platform of the IND station and is of an R68 D train stopping at the station. The second uploaded video is of a short RFW ride on an R32 C train from 42nd Street Port Authority Bus Terminal to 34th Street - Penn Station on the 8th Ave IND Line.
