  • Is the IHC 2-8-0 Consol based on prototype?

  • Discussion related to everything about model railroading, from layout design and planning, to reviews of related model tools and equipment. Discussion includes O, S, HO, N and Z, as well as narrow gauge topics. Also includes discussion of traditional "toy train" and "collector" topics such as Lionel, American Flyer, Marx, and others. Also includes discussion of outdoor garden railways and live steamers.

Does anyone know if the IHC 2-8-0 Consolidation is based on an actual prototype,
if so, what road, or, is it a "generic" locomotive? Any suggestions for replacement
couplers, and, fine tuning of the motor? Any help would be appreciated.

For the IHC/Mehano(nee AHM?),Kadee recomends the #39 for the pilot,#5 for the tender.
Try to "break in" the motor, check and lube the valve gear, deburr as needed.

The IHC locomotive shells tend to be rather generic in their design and sometimes are swapped over several wheel arrangements to create a different locomotives, sometimes rather inappropriately. However, IHC's mechanisms generally tend to be good runners, often providing fairly smooth overall operation once broken in. So, while perhaps not as accurate in appearance as many of today's more high-end HO steam locomotives, IHC engines are generally nice for their (low) price and will give good service on a limited budget.
