As suggested by another forum member, re-posting this into its own topic:

RPI will be decommissioning the ex-Alco nuclear plant at the end of the spring semester to make way for the casino. We don't know yet if it will be relocated.

Don't get me started! The reactor is used to teach people a useful profession. Schenectady, now the scumbag capital of the universe wants a casino because it will create jobs. Casinos also bring gambling addiction, prostitution, drugs. How many customers will be gambling with funds which they can't well afford to loose?

I'm not some saint of morality. My point is, why not make the area attractive for industrial use? Several of my wife's relatives worked at Alco. It was a good paying job. Employees were well off, and could afford to support the local businesses. They need to find a suitable replacement for those types of jobs.

Spike,

I had didtant uncle who worked fopr Alco and that area brings back memories. NYS has too many regulations and taxes for a new business to be a success unless it gets tax exemptions. They all think casinos will be a quick fix but thats not the case. Look at Atlantic City and all those casinos didnt do squat for that town. Its still a dump!

I agree with Engineer Spike. The plant could have been a basis for a Industrial Park which means permanent jobs. The City Of Schenectady has become a city of high taxes, no jobs and corrupt City management.

I recently drove by the old Alco site. The steel place is still right in front of the new casino, and I saw that the reactor building is still there.
