I'd like to know how often axle roller bearings have to be inspected, and how often they need actual maintenance.
Also, how often did the old-time solid bearings have to be repacked?

These days the roller bearings need inspection when ever FRA demands on freight cars once a year on EMU's every 92 days .
They do not need any maintenance like re-lubrication since their sealed bearings, they get inspected for damage and leakage only.
the old friction bearings needed inspection every 1000 miles and have oil topped off, plus checking for heat, leakage, damage etc.
