Worth reading if you can access it is the 1950 paper “Railway Electric Braking Systems” By F. Whyman. This provided a concise and succinct summary of the various electric locomotive electric braking systems, AC and DC, then extant, so is a good starting point for the basics.

Both IEEE and IET list it:
