Anyone have insight as to why the DL&W built down to Wilawanna (Pennsylvania) instead of coming off the Chemung River crossing and heading west more or less on the alignment of current I-86 / Route 17 ?

Two more bridges, but bridges didn't seem to phase the D&W too much.

Probably soil conditions or flood concerns. They had already dipped into PA
at South Waverly, so they chose what they felt was the best route.
