We went down to explore an abandoned branch line from Nanticoke to Glen Lyon. It comes off near the old Honey Pot Yard (now reduced to single track plus a passing track.) We discovered that they have re-built part of this branch line as a spur line up to Access Road. The intention is to use it as a parking track for now and then to be a spur line for a new potential industrial park. After sniffing around the newspapers on the internet an article popped up. This was an article from 2006.

The tracks were originally PRR. Here is the article

Yudichak announces $900,000 in funding for local rail project

HARRISBURG, Oct. 27 – State Rep. John Yudichak, D-Luzerne, announced that a local company has received $900,000 in capital budget grant funding for a rail project.

HUD Inc. in Newport Township was awarded the funding through the Rail Freight Transportation Assistance Program, part of the capital budget allocation for 2006. The funds will be used to construct a two-track siding for connecting the facility to the Delaware & Hudson’s Honey Pot Yard and to extend the track into the Whitney Point Industrial Park. This will enable HUD to ship waste coal to other regions using the rail system.

The completed project will help create 55 jobs, maintain 60 jobs and reduce the number of truck trips currently required by 21,333 trips per year.

“This project will let us ship our unwanted waste coal to alternative fuel plants that use it to create energy and to other industries that want it. Increasing the area’s rail accessibility to other areas of the state will continue to develop our economic opportunities for the future,” Yudichak said.

Yudichak praised Ken Pollock, owner of HUD Inc., and the Delaware and Hudson Railway Co. Inc., for making the project possible with their willingness to work together.

Separate from the state’s General Fund budget, the capital budget is adopted every few years to provide funding for public improvement projects such as construction, renovation, furniture and equipment, transportation, redevelopment, flood control, state parks, and special projects for state agencies. Projects listed in the capital budget must be approved by the governor for funding, and must also acquire a local sponsor and matching funds

We explored the line in 2007 where the spur has been built but had not yet been tied to the mainline. The switch needed was there but off to the side. If the D&H is a fallen flag, why are they mentioning the project is for the D&H ??

My GPS with street level maps loaded in it did show the active tracks as "Delaware & Hudson" I have heard that CP Rail keeps the D&H as some sort of paper entity only for tax purposes??
