Employees, retirees and their families are invited to celebrate the unveiling of the Chicago & North Western Heritage locomotive July 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The special employee event takes place at Ogilvie Transportation Center, located at 500 W. Madison St. in Chicago. Those attending the event should enter through the trainshed or concourse level at Clinton Street.

Food, drinks and free gifts will be available while supplies last. There also will be a raffle and drawing for prizes at noon. In addition, Bob Turner, senior vice president-Corporate Relations, will speak to employees.

The Chicago & North Western unit is the latest addition to Union Pacific’s Heritage Series of locomotives. Incorporating historic colors and graphic elements of the Chicago & North Western, the new locomotive pays tribute to the men and women of the railroad that was a key link between Chicago and the West. Chicago & North Western was the first railroad to connect with Union Pacific at Council Bluffs in 1867.

The Chicago & North Western locomotive is the fifth unit in the heritage fleet. The Denver & Rio Grande Western locomotive was introduced in June. The Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific locomotives were unveiled in July 2005, and the Katy locomotive rolled out in September 2005. The Southern Pacific will be introduced Aug. 19 in Roseville, Calif.

After the scheduled festivities on 7/15, UP 1995 will make its maiden voyage west to Council Bluffs, IA on Sunday, 7/16. It will be the lead unit on train MPRCB-16, with its "unpatched" CNW brethren, GE units 8646 and 8701. For those that want pics, MPRCB is normally called out of Proviso at 1300, so plan accordingly, and keep that scanner handy just in case there's a change of plans...

From UP Website:

C&NW Design Includes Elements of Railroad’s Past

The Chicago & North Western locomotive is the fifth in Union Pacific's Heritage fleet.

The Chicago & North Western Heritage Unit was unveiled July 15 at an employee event in Chicago. The C&NW Heritage locomotive was designed to reflect several eras in the railroad’s history.

The green and yellow colors on the Heritage locomotive were applied to C&NW passenger cars in 1912 and to diesel locomotives in 1939. The ball-and-bar logo on the side of the locomotive was trademarked in 1891. The "employee-owned" version of the ball-and-bar logo on the nose was introduced by C&NW during the 1970s. The Heritage unit’s "lightning stripe" was first seen on the C&NW's C44-9Ws (Dash 9s) units beginning in November 1993.

Members of UP’s Heritage Series creative team include Marty Amsler, creative director; John Bromley, director of historic projects; Mike Iden, general director-car and locomotive engineering; Brenda Mainwaring, director-corporate relations; and Greg Pietruszynski, manager-mechanical engineering. Outside experts, including Nick Kallas of the Illinois Railway Museum, Joe Pierson of the C&NW Historical Society, and the Williams-Hayward Paint Co., also provided invaluable assistance.

The Heritage locomotive designs are inspired by the proud past of the railroads that have become an integral part of Union Pacific’s future. Careful consideration was given to traditional color schemes, logos and graphic elements, which were used in a contemporary manner to embody and celebrate their history.

The first three Heritage Series locomotives -- the Missouri Pacific, Western Pacific and Katy units -- were introduced in 2005 and are currently operating around the UP system. The Denver & Rio Grande Western was unveiled last month, and the Southern Pacific unit will be introduced Aug. 19 in Roseville, Calif.

Each Heritage series locomotive features a unique paint scheme, incorporating elements of one of the six railroads that have merged with Union Pacific. This summer, UPOnline is taking a closer look at design considerations for the final three locomotives in the series

Not that this would happen but UP should also do a CGW and/or a "Louie" unit. But then they would have to do a Litchfield & Madison too I guess

It wouldn't make much sense for UP to create a "heritage" locomotive for a railroad that their predecessor bought out before becoming part of UP. Remember, all six railroads in UP's heritage locomotive program were large class one systems in their own right at one time, and grew to that point gradually by buying out smaller roads. In a way, UP heritage unit 1995 does honor CGW indirectly through CNW, so that's good enough...
