New Diesel Engine Plant to Serve CIS Region

GE Transportation, TransMashDiesel and JSC National Company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a diesel engine manufacturing plant in Astana, Kazakhstan. The plant will produce GE Evolution Series diesel engines to serve customers in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. It is expected to be in operation by the end of 2013.

GE has been building locomotives in Kazakh stan for a while now, I suppose with engines from Grove City. Evidently GE and the Kazakh authorities think the demand for Kazakh-built locomotives will continue and be strong enough to make it worth building more of the major components locally.

Probably looking at the market in countries of the former Soviet Union, not just in Kazahkstan.
