What's that; excessive unburnt fuel build-up from idling? Or is it just the fact that wanted to show what a dragster a P42 is, eh?

Usually if a P42DC is hauling rear end it either smokes a little or a lot. Those flames are probably from excess carbon buildup or unburnt fuel in the exhaust stack.

actually.. those flames are signals that it is time to replace the turbo. Ge's of both the Dash 8 and 9's were/are known for that problem.

:-) Why this locomotive spits the fire up on her top ?

It is normal to see that ?

When the non-combusted fuel clings onto the exhaust manifold, it stays there until the temperature in the manifold reaches a critical temperature, and the gunk burns. GE might as well have made its locomotives naturally aspirated! :P

Now to see an EMD regularly do such a thing.

Also, it either idles or revs, and the brakes are either released, or applied. It also moves, either forward or backwards. Hope this helps....... :P
