In the 3/56 issue of the Official Guide, the C&O schedules for the Chicago / Grand Rapids service carry the notations that westbound trains will stop at Michigan City only to discharge passengers from Holland and east, and eastbound trains will stop on signal only to pick up passengers for Holland and points east thereof.

Anybody know the reason for this?

The NYC and South Shore Line also served Michigan City, in fact all three lines still have passenger service in town. I imagine that the CSS took most of the local traffic.

Note: both the NYC line and the South Shore still have passenger stops in town..the C&O station was torn down in the 70's..Al's supermarket parking lot is where the depot used to stand.

CSS was owned by C&O after 1966, so it would make sense post-1966 that C&O wouldn't carry those passengers that would cannibalize their brother road. However, I have no explanation for 1956...
