Nice to see that Ramsey - Main St. has 4x the riders of the Elephant. MSU also with really impressive numbers. So they spent what, $60MM for 355 extra riders?

Secaucus surprisingly has that many people that start there. How many did Harmon Cove have in the past? I guess direct service into NYP has helped the people of Secaucus, even if there isn't any parking.

Those arent the two Glen Rocks you are comparing; that is the Glen Rock stations combined and Glen Ridge. 817+819=1636, way too much for a town with the size and demographics of Glen Rock.

Wasn't paying attention. Apparently they combine the two stations into one number.

Thanks a lot for posting this. How'd you get in contact with NJ Transit? I mean like when you have questions like this, what E-Mail address do you use to contact them?

Bay Head, just click on contact on the main page of the NJT website. Follow the instructions from there.

A couple of points to keep in mind...

These are average weekday boardings at the noted station for the fiscal year 2005 (which ended June 30, 2005 — over a year ago).

Some stations (East Orange, Newark Broad, Highland, etc. on the M&E and Perth Amboy and Paterson on other lines come to mind) have large "reverse peak" ridership, with outbound boarding riders in the AM. Those riders are counted just the same as a "traditional" inbound AM rider is in these statistics.

Local riders (those not going to a major terminal) are included in these counts also. NEC and M&E stations in particular have large local ridership. I've seen it written that the number of NJT's local riders (just on rail, not bus or light rail) is greater than the total ridership on Caltrain (San Francisco) or MARC (Washington/Baltimore area).

At Secaucus, I believe there is a slight overcounting due to the Metro-North Mail-Tik monthly riders; since their MN monthly is a Metrocard, it cannot be used in the Secaucus turnstiles, so those riders are given a Secaucus-NY monthly in addition to their Metrocard ticket. Perhaps someone closer to the subject can clarify this.

I think it's kind of interesting that there are almost twenty stations with less ridership than the much-maligned Mount Tabor station.

And I think it is interesting that Morristown has more boardings than Secaucus. Yet Morristown is a crapshoot compared to Secaucus.

That is a pretty darn cool list! Thanks!

But that doesn't count transfers at Secaucus, except the possible previously mentioned Metro-North issue.

Why is Lebanon even kept open? I know school bus stops that get more ridership than that :-D

Just you wait.... NJT within a year or two will have more frequent service to High Bridge plus they are going to be opening up soon a HUGE condo building which is just next to the train station. High Bridge's ridership wasn't the greatest until recently and I expect with Lebanon, the tides will soon turn.

How come Hazlet got high level platforms and Little Silver is getting high level platforms when Morristown and South Orange get only mini-highs and Maplewood and Jersey Avenue get nothing? The ridership at those stations dwarf those at Hazlet and Little Silver.

 #280537  by Bay Head Local

I was suprised to see that South Orange has higher ridership than Maplewood. IIRC, the reason those stations (South Orange/Maplewood)don't have high-level platforms is for historical reasons or something like that. Also I think there are plans to turn Jersey Avenue into a full time high-level station.
