I'm starting this thread specifically for any and all discussion to do with the Raritan Valley Line. Think of it as kind of a central location for it. This way, nobody has to to sift through five or six threads to find what they want to know about on the RVL. And so we begin.

Here's what has been seen working the Raritan Valley Line in the past 48 hours. Serious corrections and additions welcome as always…

Saw it yesterday passing through Bound Brook. It was on the NJCL all last week, and the NJCL and RVL seem to play ping-pong with sets, so I don't expect this one to stay around too long.

Cool!! Long live the GP40FH-2, aka "beasts," aka "warthogs"! We could also use this thread to discuss the whereabouts of the remaining 4135-4144…unless Nick or Irish would like us to start a new thread for them!

As of this morning (with a few changes)…
  • 4116/6016 - 6 Cars
    4125/6009 - 6 Cars
    4127/6015 - 6 Cars

    4137/5002 - 6 Cars

Chimney Rock Power (West): NJTR4216/NJT4300. The power went West last night, and never returned. My understanding is they took rubber wheels back to The Club, and the loads will be Eastward tonight.

4207/6003 was on the line on Monday with a six car mixed set.

Keep an eye out for 4201/6059; it was on the NJCL today during the day as well as last Friday morning, so its due to move over to the RVL.

Just as a trial to see if people like the idea, I'll record full consist information tonight. If everyone responds well to it, I might do so regularly.

Seems like the F40PH-2CATs are prowling the RVL a lot these days.

Ended up not being able to keep full consist notes. I got too tied up in the freight action. Anyway: Here are the Raritan sets as of tonight's sightings…

At 22:29 X4206W cleared Roselle Park with its namesake engine, running light. The unit was facing West. Probably just for the coach swap. Plenty of spare MU cables laying on the pilot though.

4137 is still around with five C2s (5000 behind the locomotive, 5002 as the cab) and a lone C4, 5544, next to the 5002.

And as quickly as she comes, she goes. 4207 currently sitting in Hudson Yard all by her lonesome. It's the first time I've noticed her "two-tone" paint job also. About three-quarters of the locomotive is one shade of gray and the front quarter is another darker shade. Looks pretty pathetic.

I'm hoping we can see some eight-car diesels once the bi-levels are in operation. Lots of six-car trains now in the system and even a few seven-car diesel sets. We know the PL42ACs can handle up to ten cars, so I guess we'll see.

The only problem with using eight-car trains on the RVL is getting the passengers used to walking up or back to exit. Except for Roselle Park, none of the platforms (high or low) can fit eight cars.

Some of the low ones only fit six, which causes delays even for seven-car 5709.

Yes, but for the most part since 5709 runs right in the middle of the rush hour, most of the riders on that train are regular commuters who know the routine or are somewhat "train-savvy". On 5713, for example, while there are still many regular commuters, there is also a large amount of "casual riders" who refuse to listen to announcements, even though they never rode a train before in their lives. I love when they try to exit through the center doors at low platforms, or try to exit in the back for Bridgewater.

The best (or worst) was when there was around 15-20 people still in the car behind the engine after we left Annandale heading towards High Bridge. There was still luggage on the racks, and they're sitting there like they don't have a worry in the world. A couple of seconds later, they had worries when I told them that they would be coming back to Raritan Yard with us if they didn't move their asses to the rear of the train in time!
